I don’t believe in luck, but I do believe in superstitions.
Seems strange, right? My good friend and Astrology hound April (hey, girl!) would say that this type of contradiction is what Aquarians like me live for. But give me a minute to explain, and I promise you, it will make perfect sense. (Said like a true Aquarius – ha!)
Luck implies chance. You won an iPad at the charity luncheon. You made it home just before a torrential rainstorm started. You scored the best parking spot at the mall. You were at the right place at the right time. You’re lucky. Conversely, on Friday the 13th you might be hyper-aware of opportunities for misfortune, given that this day is considered by many to be unlucky.
I personally don’t believe in chance. When you are going through a “lucky” streak, it’s the Universe working to bring you good fortune and abundance! This often comes in the form of help from our Angels, Guides, and deceased loved ones.
My friend James was at a company awards dinner where they were giving away an all-expenses paid, week-long trip to Hawaii. His father had passed away suddenly about two months prior and he was still feeling the pain of this loss. James really wanted the trip, because he knew he needed something to boost his sorrow. Just before the drawing, he took a moment to silently ask his dad for help. Only Seconds later, the announcer called James’ name as the winner. He was in complete shock – over 800 people were in attendance but he is the one who actually won the trip. And he attributes this “luck” to his late father’s intervention.
Have you ever narrowly missed an accident? You walked (or drove) away knowing that only a split second prior you were at the exact spot where it occurred. Was that luck? Or was it your Angels looking out for you?
And for those who believe in bad luck – you can chalk that up to the Universe as well. We all want our lives to be perfect, but you cannot have the light without the darkness (another Universal Law). It’s not that the Universe is out to screw you over or anything – it’s just sending you circumstances to bring a part of your life into balance. And often this comes at a time when we should be making changes, but are hesitant to do so (reference The Tower for Tarot aficionados).
So why then, do I believe in superstition? It’s the same reason: The Universe.
Since I was a little girl, my mother and grandmother were always remarking about little superstitions that were passed along to them. If salt was spilled, they would toss some over their left shoulder. They’d never let a lilac bush grow large enough to cover a grave. If a bird flew into the house, it needed to be coaxed out the same entry point or a death in the family would be imminent. If any silverware dropped on the floor, we knew we’d have a visitor soon – the knife meant a man, the fork meant a woman, and the spoon, a child. And don’t ever open an umbrella indoors or you’ll just have general bad luck.
Have you ever heard the phrase “what you think about, you bring about”? When your thoughts are focused on doom and gloom, you’re going to attract doom and gloom. So if you think breaking a mirror will bring you seven years of bad luck then it will! If you see a black cat cross your path and think you’re doomed, well yes, the Universe is going to send you some misfortune! Not because you encountered these signs of bad luck – but because your mind is attracting ‘bad luck’ to you.
If avoiding (or doing) certain things causes us to think we will have impending misfortune, then we are putting out signals to the Universe that attract it to us.
The good news here is that you are in control of what happens to you. YOU have the power to bring about your own good
luck fortune or bad luck fortune.
