We all face stresses on a daily basis, but when these stressors become overwhelming, we may find it hard to control our reaction to them. In modern times, a ‘quick fix’ might be popping a pill, but there are alternatives! Try one of these natural ways to relieve stress and anxiety.
Signs you have anxiety
According to the Mayo Clinic, the following symptoms may indicate you have anxiety:
- Nervousness, restlessness, feeling tense
- Feeling like you may be in danger
- Increased heart rate
- Sweating, trembling, feeling weak or extremely tired
- Difficulty taking your mind off your current situation
- Sleep troubles, insomnia
- Problems with your gastrointestinal tract
- Often feeling worried and having trouble controlling it
- Feeling a need to avoid things that trigger your anxiety
IMPORTANT: Anxiety is a serious medical condition that can lead to severe and life-threatening health problems. It is important to see your doctor immediately if your anxiety is interfering with your normal daily life, you are experiencing physical or mental health issues, or you find yourself turning to drugs and/or alcohol to combat your situation. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or others, call 9-1-1 and seek emergency treatment immediately.
NOTE: Hypnotherapy can be a very helpful part of an anxiety treatment plan, however it is not a substitute for medical care by a qualified health professional.
Looking for a natural solution?
If you and your doctor agree that your anxiety is at a level where it will benefit from natural treatment, there are many ways you can combat stress and anxiety without the use of drugs.
My favorite natural ways to relieve and reduce stress
Cuddle up with a furry friend
Studies show that doing something as simple as petting your dog or cat will instantly lower your blood pressure. How freaked out could you be while on the receiving end of puppy kisses? Why not take your favorite four-legged or feathered friend for a jaunt at the park and…
Make friends with some trees
Or anything green and natural, really. That could mean going for a walk or hike, tending to some houseplants, or even just visualizing yourself in a lush tropical forest while you calmly…
When we’re stressed it can be really challenging to settle in and relax, yet we know that being mindful and present through meditation helps us to take our mind off of any worries about the past or future. Meditation not only brings down our stress level, it also naturally helps us to relax and get into a healthier state of mind. Having a regular meditation practice has also been shown to improve one’s ability to…
Involve yourself in a new hobby or an old favorite one. Whatever you decide, it’s helpful if you are keeping your hands occupied. The physical aspect will help you to get grounded and focus on a task rather than distracting thoughts. So consider something like baking a cake, learning to play an instrument, painting a sunset, crocheting an afghan, or writing poetry in your…
Writing things down is an excellent way to release stress. You might choose to use this medium as a way to express your feelings about some of the difficulties in your life. Or you may decide to distract yourself from your harsh reality by composing something joyful, funny, uplifting, and/or spiritual. Writing is an excellent way to manifest your dreams and…
Allow yourself to indulge
As long as you don’t over-indulge. It’s important to ensure you are keeping up a healthy self-care practice, just steer clear of any unhealthy behaviors and avoid escaping reality by allowing yourself too much of a good thing. Treat yourself to a piece of dark chocolate. Give yourself permission to take a long, languishing afternoon nap. Snuggle up with your sweetheart and…
Having sex is a great way to release built up tension and stress. Just mind that you are not objectifying your partner as the “release” for your tension. It is extremely important to establish a real connection with your lover, from which you will both benefit. And remember, you don’t really need two people to have great sex. There’s nothing wrong with “clearing and activating your sacral chakra” while you’re by yourself! In fact, it’s extremely healthy!
