Renowned cosmologist Carl Sagan said, “We’re made of star stuff” and he wasn’t wrong! Science has proven that the elements we have in our bodies originated in now-extinguished stars. But the planets and stars also determine other important aspects of ourselves including our personality, emotions, and even physical traits. Today I’m sharing how to learn about yourself by exploring your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs.
How to determine your Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs
A simple browser search for Natal Chart or Birth Chart Generator will net you a ton of results, and any of them can be used. The site I personally prefer for anything astrological is astro-seek.com (no affiliation). Once you enter your birth details, you can learn all kinds of interesting things about your chart, including your dominant element and your “signature” sign which may not be any of your primary signs. Of course the basic information will include your Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs.
In order to run your Natal Chart, you’ll need some basic information
- Your birth date
- The time you were born
- Location of your birth (city, state/province, country)
If you don’t know your exact time of birth, don’t despair! I found mine in a baby book my Grandmother made for me. A friend learned hers from a hospital bracelet her mother had saved. You might be one of the lucky few who has it on your birth certificate. Of course you may be able to ask your mother or another relative, at least for their best guess.
I recommend that you really try to find out your birth time, because without it there is no way to accurately determine your rising sign and some of the other aspects of your chart.
Now, let’s explore what each of these signs mean.
Your Sun Sign
Your Sun Sign is based upon the zodiac sign which the sun was in at the moment of your birth. It’s the core of your being, your personality. It’s about your self, your individuality – the unique things that make you YOU.
Your Sun Sign will give clues as to what you are passionate about and where your creativity lies. Along those lines, your Sun Sign may indicate the profession which is best suited for you. Additionally, the House your sun is in will indicate what you need in order to feel special.
Your Sun Sign will shed light on where you really shine and who you are. The people who are closest to you and know you best see you as your Sun Sign.
Sun Sign surprises
Some people find out that their Sun Sign isn’t what they originally thought it was because they were born on a cusp – a day when the sun moved from one sign to another. For example, one of my family members was born on March 20th. We always assumed he was a Pisces because that’s the generalized information you often see published. However after learning that he was born in the late afternoon that day, I ran his chart and discovered that the sun had already moved into Aries before the time of his birth. This meant that Aries is actually his Sun Sign, not Pisces!
Your Moon Sign
Your Moon Sign is the position of the Moon at the time of your birth. Because the moon moves between Zodiac signs every couple of days, without your birth time you may not be able to determine this sign.
The Moon Sign you were born under will tell us about how you process and project your emotions. The House your Moon Sign is in will indicate where you look for emotional satisfaction and the things that make you feel most secure.
Intuition and instincts are also revealed with your Moon Sign, along with your memories, subconscious mind, and motivation. If you read Tarot cards, you will find a correlation here.
The Moon is about all things hidden, and those traits are often the things you want to hide about yourself. You’ll probably exhibit most of the aspects in this sign, but the more negative aspects will be what really bother you. However, this will be what you need to shine a light on to overcome as part of your life lessons (shadow work).
Some people believe the Moon placement also gives clues about your relationship with your mother.
Your Rising Sign – also known as your Ascendant
The Zodiac sign on the Eastern horizon at the exact time of your birth tells us what your Rising Sign/Ascendant is. This also determines which signs correspond with the different Houses of the Zodiac because your Ascendant is always in your First House.
The Ascendant represents your basic personality, your temperament, and your behavior. Some astrologers believe it can even indicate your physical characteristics and mannerisms.
This sign is about your attitude, mentality, and the first impression you make. It’s how others see you because it’s what you project to them. Similarly, this sign will tell us how you view the world around you and how you react to situations.
